It's Safe2Tell 
Safe2Tell makes it easy for anyone to report any kind of concern. Since District 51 re-introduced this tool to students and the rest of the community in March 2017, it has received 46 reports related to suicide, in addition to 139 reports of other kinds. Whenever a report occurs, the appropriate authorities are notified to get the individual help as soon as possible.

December:

During the month of December, Valley School seniors and graduating juniors continue to meet to update their graduation plans. By accessing the Naviance program, they are creating their own inpidualized plan towards graduation and their career path beyond. Students, please see Ms. Haptonstall if you have not been given the opportunity to meet and plan for your future.

 

As we approach the holidays…just something to ponder:

We, as adults, feel the stresses that come with holidays, finances, expectations, relationships, and all other facets of our lives. It is important to remember that our students are at times experiencing the same stressors as the adults in their lives.

According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association in 2014, American teens experience similar levels of stress as adults. Teens reported a stress level of 5.8 out of 10, which topped the reported level of adults’ 5.1 out of 10. Many teens reported feeling overwhelmed and depressed or sad because of that stress. In addition, more than 1/3 teens reported fatigue and nearly 1/4 reported skipping meals due to stress. Nearly half of all teens report they are not doing enough or are not sure if they are doing enough to manage their stress adequately or effectively.  

There are positive and healthy ways to let go of stress.  Your teen may need your help in identifying those activities that might be useful to them for stress management.  Below are a list of coping mechanisms that our Valley School students have shared with us. Many of these activities are also opportunities to spend time with your student.

Calm/steady breathing to relax Allowing themselves down time
Going for walk/exercize Journaling
Talking to a parent/family member Time with friends/family
Listening to music Time spent with a pet
